匂 (Kanji for scent (good or bad))

A little synonym-tell-'em-apart is in order;

匂い　(におい) = Smell, good or bad.

臭い　(におい) = Bad smell.

香り　 (かおり) = good smell.

匂い emphasizes less the particular KIND of smell, and more SMELL as opposed to taste, touch, sound, etc.
