匂い (におい) = Smell, good or bad.
臭い (におい) = Bad smell.
香り (かおり) = good smell.
匂い emphasizes less the particular KIND of smell, and more SMELL as opposed to taste, touch, sound, etc.

Can also be used metaphorically, like "This reeks of conspiracy!" (陰謀の匂い！)
